Types of neuropathic pain

There are two types of neuropathic pain:

Peripheral neuropathic pain is caused by an injury or condition that has damaged the nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord. For example, peripheral neuropathic pain can be caused by diabetes, shingles, HIV, or may occur after surgery or amputation.

Central neuropathic pain is caused by a wound, injury or disease to your central nervous system. Your central nervous system is made up of your brain and your spinal cord. For example, central neuropathic pain can occur after a stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and cancer of the brain or spinal cord.
