Symptoms of neuropathic pain

Many people with neuropathic pain don't describe it as "painful". Instead, they may say that it feels like burning, or being pricked with pins, or shocked with electricity. These symptoms could happen unexpectedly, or may result from something that wouldn't usually cause pain, such as the touch of clothing on the skin.

Neuropathic pain may involve:

  • burning
  • numbness
  • shooting pain
  • pins and needles
  • electric shock-like pain
  • sensitivity to touch or cold
  • tingling
  • a crushing sensation
  • a deep, aching pain
  • swelling along with temperature changes
  • skin discolouration
